2010 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick Award

6/2010

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain received the highest possible rollover protection rating of "Good" in the first Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rollover tests of midsize SUVs and crossovers, one of four tests leading to both vehicles receiving the Institute's Top Safety Pick award.
The IIHS's roof strength test pushes a metal plate against one corner of a roof at a constant speed, before five inches of roof crush is reached. To receive its "Good" rating the subject vehicle must withstand a force equal to four times its weight.
"The Top Safety award recognizes vehicles that are on the top rung for safety," said IIHS president Adrian Lund.  "The Equinox and Terrain are in an elite group of vehicles that have achieved the highest ratings for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid serious crashes."
The 2010 Equinox and Terrain offer standard four-wheel disc brakes, traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Both offer six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags, head curtain side air bags and seat-mounted side air bags.
"Equinox and Terrain are great examples of a comprehensive safety approach that's designed to offer peace of mind and keep drivers as safe as possible on the road," said Jeff Boyer, General Motors executive director of Safety. "This includes technologies to help drivers avoid crashes, features to protect occupants in the event of a crash and systems that get the right kind of help to the scene as quickly as possible."
The 2010 Equinox and Terrain also have received the highest possible five-star front- and side-impact ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GM Increases Number of J.D. Power Initial Quality Study Awards

6/2010

General Motors Co.'s commitment to continuous vehicle quality improvement received significant recognition in the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS) with 10 models ranking in the top three in their segment for quality performance in the first 90 days of ownership.
GM's Lansing (Mich.) Grand River assembly plant - home of the Cadillac CTS family and STS - was awarded the study's Bronze Plant Award in the North/South America region, and was the only U.S. plant to be recognized in the study.
Vehicle segment wins for the Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models support the quality improvement trend seen in internal evaluations, which show that, since 2007, GM has reduced warranty repairs by 45 percent per vehicle in North America.
GM trucks swept the top three spots in the large crossover/SUV category with the Chevrolet Tahoe leading the way, followed by the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon/XL.  The Chevrolet Avalanche was the top-ranked large pickup for initial quality, tied with the GMC Sierra.  GM also took the top spot in the large premium crossover/SUV segment (Cadillac Escalade) and ranked in the top three in the midsize car (Chevrolet Malibu), entry premium car (Cadillac CTS), and large car (Buick Lucerne) segments.
"Delivering top-quality vehicles for our customers is our overriding priority," said Dan Nicholson, GM vice president of Global Quality.  "Our entire team is committed to improving our vehicles, and we never lose sight of the fact that the competition is also moving fast."
The 2010 IQS is based on responses from more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership.  The study is based on a 228-question survey designed to provide manufacturers with information to quickly identify design-related problems, defects and malfunctions.

2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Continues to Bring the Track Back to the Showroom!

This year, Corvette continues its tradition of track-to-street technology transfer with the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

"Designed to further incorporate technology developed through racing, the Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Corvette's first race in the 24 Hours of LeMans," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. "With a limited production of 500 units, this car is a must-have for the true Corvette collector and driving enthusiast."

"For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best-balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1," said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer.

The Corvette Z06 Carbon will be available in two colors: Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06 dynamic design and reduce mass and aerodynamic lift. For track events, customers can also choose to install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

The Z06 Carbo boasts Brembo® carbon ceramic brakes with specific dark gray metallic calipers. These brakes were first introduced on the ZR1. Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels complement the car's Michelin PS2 tires. Other mechanical features include Magnetic Selective Ride Control, a first for the Z06, and enhanced cooling equipment.

The Z06 Carbon's ebony leather and suede interior is complemented by blue or orange seat stitching to match the exterior color chosen. Other features include a unique steering wheel emblem, sill plate, logoed headrest and a special carbon pattern engine cover. The suede enhancements on the steering wheel, shifter, seat inserts, armrests and doors add to the luxury of this limited edition Z06.

For the ambitious racer, an optional Z07 performance package, that includes the mechanical upgrades introduced on the Z06 Carbon, can be added to any 2011 Z06 model. This package also includes Competition Gray 20-in. spoke wheels and all the chassis and cooling upgrades.

The CFZ Z06 carbon fiber package, which includes black carbon fiber rockers, splitter and roof panel with the full-width body color spoiler, can also be purchased, with or without the Z07 package, on all 2011 Z06 models.

The 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition, as well as the new Z07 and CFZ packages will be available in late summer, 2010.

Chevrolet and GM Foundation Help Missouri Tornado Relief

Foundation's $100,000 grant and Full-Size Vans Aid Red Cross and United Way

DETROIT ? The General Motors Foundation today announced a $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross to aid recovery efforts for victims of the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. on May 22.

"Thanks to the generosity of the General Motors Foundation, the Red Cross has been able to mobilize support to help families recovering from the recent tornado in Joplin, Missouri," said Neal Litvack, chief development officer at the American Red Cross. "These contributions from the General Motors Foundation, along with the strong support of the American public, are critical because they enable the Red Cross to rush immediate relief to disaster victims."

The GM Foundation also provides funding to the Annual Disaster Relief Giving Program, which enables the Red Cross to provide immediate disaster relief anywhere in the country.

In the wake of what many are calling the deadliest tornado in recent history, the program quickly dispatched a Disaster Action Team in Joplin to assess the crises, open a shelter and partner with other organizations to provide emergency care for hundreds of evacuees.

"GM has employees who work in Missouri, and we want to be there to help our neighbors who are hurting," said Bob Ferguson, GM Foundation chairman and GM vice president, Global Public Policy.  "With the Red Cross, the Foundation can help with the recovery effort and restore some hope that things will get better."

Also as part of today's announcement, Chevrolet will provide two Chevrolet Express full-size vans, built at GM's Wentzville, Mo. facility, to help United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas volunteers with evacuation and recovery work.  Employees at Wentzville and GM's Fairfax, Kan., plant, which builds the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick Lacrosse sedans, are collecting relief donations at the plants' entrances over the next two days.

"For more than 28 years, we've built full-size Chevrolet and GMC vans in Missouri and enjoyed a collaborative and supportive relationship with the state and local community," said Alan Batey, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. "It's important that we return the support and care to our extended GM family in Joplin and surrounding communities following the devastation of the deadly storm."

GM's OnStar has opened its Crisis Assist Services for subscribers in the Joplin area, which provides free hands-free calling minutes and access to Advisors who can provide directions.  OnStar will continue the free service for an additional seven days as search and rescue efforts continue.

The total Chevrolet, GM Foundation and OnStar contribution is estimated at more than $170,000.  OnStar's Directions and Connections service is also being provided for one year along with 1,000 hands-free calling minutes for each of the donated vans.
So far this year, GM and the GM Foundation have provided more than $1.7 million to disaster relief efforts in Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, as well as the Southern U.S. states hit by extreme weather. The contributions have included the donation of 13 Chevrolet and GMC trucks for use in rescue and reconstruction efforts in the United States. Additionally, GM employees across the country have donated hundreds of volunteer hours collecting and distributing emergency supplies and providing manpower where needed.

GM employees interested in providing support to tornado victims are encouraged to use the donation link through the company's internal website.  Other individuals can help by visiting www.redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make a donation.

About the GM Foundation:
